What is Sound Ricochet?
Sound Ricochet is an inclusive international music exchange program designed for students with and without disabilities. Students study and use music to reflect on their traditions and communicate with others about their culture. Each classroom creates and submits a video of their music to exchange with other participating classrooms.
Who can participate in Sound Ricochet?
Sound Ricochet is intended for students ages 8–14 and for teachers with all levels of musical experience.
What is included in the program?
Teachers receive a teacher guide that provides four lessons, each with two activities, a literacy connection, and an extension for music teachers. One activity from each of the following lessons will be recorded and submitted through a video:
- Music from the Environment
- Music from Our Childhood
- Music in Our Daily Lives
- How We Celebrate with Music
VSA will edit and compile the videos from all participating classrooms onto a DVD that will be mailed to all participating teachers. Students will enjoy seeing their class on the finished DVD and knowing that their music has traveled around the world. Both the DVD and the accompanying descriptions of the musical pieces will facilitate rich classroom discussions and will allow students to gain insights into other cultures.
*You must have access to a video camera to participate in this program*
How can I incorporate Sound Ricochet into my instruction?
Sound Ricochet is an engaging tool that builds music and literacy skills. The program:
- Weaves seamlessly into standards-based curricula for subjects like language arts and social studies, in addition to music;
- Lends itself to a variety of teaching approaches, including differentiated and scaffolded instruction; and,
- Provides resources through the teacher guide, such as “Tips for Including All Children,” to create and sustain inclusive classrooms where students' diverse learning needs and cultural backgrounds can be respected.
