Organizational Snapshot:
Very Special Arts Bahamas is based at the Occupational Therapy Department of the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre in Nassau. The Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre is a major facility for the rehabilitation of people with physical and mental disabilities. The facility serves the 700 islands that form the Bahamian archipelago. The rehabilitation centre is home to 200 adults with mental illness and 65 children and youth with severe physical disabilities and mental challenges. Sharing the centre's campus is a 65 bed unit for substance abusers and the country's 150 bed geriatric hospital. Very Special Arts Bahamas, a VSA arts affiliate since 1986, empowers people with disabilities by fostering expression through the arts. Programs in drama, creative writing, dance, music, crafts, and the visual arts are provided to a wide age range of people with disabilities. Yearly arts festivals, exhibitions, kite-flying contests, and fashion shows are an integral part of the activities of Very Special Arts Bahamas.
