Submission Rules and Procedures

Submission Rules

  1. Apprentices who are non-US citizens must have a passport that is valid through December 2010.
  2. Apprentices must be ages 18 to 30.
  3. Apprentices must attend the entire conference June 22–27, 2010.
  4. Anyone with an interest and the enthusiasm for documentary filmmaking is encouraged to apply—every level of experience will be considered.
  5. Apprentices are selected by an application and film sample uploaded to www.withoutabox.com. Videos must be uploaded in Windows Media, Quicktime, or Real Player formats.
  6. All materials must be submitted in English. English subtitles or dubbing is required for any film sample that is in a language other than English.
  7. Applications must be uploaded with all accompanying materials and received by VSA no later than March 12, 2010.
  8. A disability is defined as an impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. For more information about disabilities that apply, please review the VSA Disability Awareness Guide, located under resources at www.vsarts.org.
  9. If you supply an e-mail address within your withoutabox.com application, you will receive an e-mail confirming receipt of your application.
  10. VSA is not responsible for entries that fail to upload.

Submission Procedures

Applications should be submitted through www.withoutabox.com. Applicants will need to complete the online application and upload the following information in order to be considered for this Apprenticeship:

  • A one-page personal statement describing interests in documentary filmmaking
  • A sample video of your documentary projects. Videos must be uploaded Windows Media, Quicktime, and Real Player formats. Reviewers will initially watch or listen to 2 minutes of a video or audio file. If project uploaded is longer than 2 minutes in runtime, filmmaker should note a specific 2 minute segment to be reviewed by noting the segment times within the application. The reviewers may opt to view the entire video for a final decision based on this segment.
  • An e-mail recommendation from someone familiar with your filmmaking experience to efkey@vsarts.org with the subject line: documentary apprentice
  • A brief, current resume including your education and filmmaking experience, if any
  • A recent headshot (JPEG) for promotional purposes
